Our Board of Directors is composed of committed individuals who work towards advancing the AHANS mission. The Board establishes policies, and overlooks a diligent team of staff members who take pride in the organization’s successes.

Charbel Daniel
B.S, Dipl. Primary Care Medicine
Chair
is the current President and CEO of Northwood Home Care and former Executive Director of Principal Operations with EMS. Charbel started his journey with EMS as a frontline paramedic in the central region. Holding progressive positions over the years, Charbel started at Mediavie HealthEd, with oversight over curriculum development, distance education, and business development. After holding these positions, Charbel became the Chief Operations Officer at MedLife, managing over 1200 frontline clinical practitioners across Massachusetts. After this experience, Charbel returned to EMC as a senior manager of system support. In addition to his passion for healthcare, Charbel is also an entrepreneur who owns and operates local and international businesses in the food industry and construction. Charbel holds a Bachelor of Science (Physics) and a Diploma in Primary Care Paramedicine from the Maritime School of Paramedicine.

Ali Lobsiger Buchan
BComm, Certif. Human Resources
Treasurer
Ali is Controller with Ritch, Williams & Richards. She was previously a Senior Financial Analyst at Crombie Real Estate Investment Trust, and a finance professional specializing in financial analysis and investor relations. With over a decade of experience in the real estate industry, Ali excels in optimizing financial processes and fostering collaboration across departments. Ali holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) degree from Saint Mary’s University, a Human Resources Certificate, and is currently enrolled in the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) program. Being actively engaged in community initiatives, Ali is committed to optimizing financial strategies and enhancing affordable housing access. Ali brings valuable expertise to her role as Treasurer at AHANS.

Elizabeth Parr-Johnston
Member of the Order of Canada, PhD, MA, BA, D.Litt.
Board Member
is the current Vice Chair of the Council of Canadian Academies. She has been a board member for Emera, the Bank of Nova Scotia, and various public service organizations. Elizabeth was the past president of Mount Saint Vincent University and the University of New Brunswick. She was also the chair for Sustainable Development Technology Canada and the Council of Canadian Academies. Elizabeth is a valued member of the AHANS board, as she carries with her knowledge from experiences in organizational governance, economics, finance, and public service.

Neil Lovitt
BA, Dipl. Urban Land Economics
Board Member
is a professional community planner with over a decade of experience. He is the current Vice President of Planning and Economic Intelligence at Turner Drake and Partners. Neil holds a Bachelor of Community Design from Dalhousie University and a diploma in Urban Land Economics from the University of British Columbia. Drawing from these experiences, Neil focuses on areas where traditional urban planning overlaps with real estate economics and market analysis. Neil joined our board in early 2020, supporting the organization as it responded to the challenges of COVID-19. As a past chair of the board and current member, Neil is excited to help and experience all the ways that AHANS will grow.

Thivjan Tharma

Board Member
is the current Executive Director for Inclusion Nova Scotia. He has over 10 years of experience in community and economic development, as well as operational management and inclusive leadership. As a passionate member of his community, Thivjan enjoys building connections across Nova Scotia, as he has been involved in Roots for Youth, North Nova Soccer Club, and CHAD Transit.

Kaitlyn Veitch
MBA, BComm
Board Member
has over 10 years of supply chain and operations experience across a diverse blend of industries. Kaitlyn is currently a manager of strategy and integration with Irving Shipbuilding. In her role, Kaitlyn leads a team that aims to innovate, grow, and stabilize their supply chain. With strong leadership skills and a background in supply chain and operations, Kaitlyn puts forward her expertise in negotiations and change management to optimize operational efficiency. Kaitlyn holds a Master of Business Administration from the Ivey School of Business and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Dalhousie University. She was previously a board member for Habitat for Humanity and is a registered yoga instructor.

Mark Bergman
MBA, BComm
Board Member
is the President of Milestone Properties, a Nova Scotia-based property management and real estate development company. With a strong interest in real estate, Mark has been involved with the development of multi-family projects and seniors’ care facilities. In addition to these projects, Mark leads a team that manages a residential property portfolio. Mark holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) degree from Saint Mary’s University and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at Western University. As a keen consultant, Mark was a board member for the Investment Property Owners Association of Nova Scotia (IPOANS) and a management consultant for various companies in the Fortune 500. In addition to consulting, Mark has a passion for teaching and has taught Property Management at Nova Scotia Community College and Real Estate Finance in the Master's of Finance program at the Nova Scotia School of Business and Economics.

Charity Carr
Certified Energy Manager
Board Member
is a certified energy manager and building science expert, holding multiple accreditations from the Association of Energy Engineers and Natural Resources Canada. Exercising this knowledge, Charity is a passionate advocate for affordable housing and energy equity. With exposure to the construction industry growing up, Charity has been active within the sector as a certified construction site manager with the Professional Home Builders Institute. To build on her involvement in construction, Charity is a board director for the Canadian Home Builders Association of Nova Scotia and is the current chair of the Atlantic Home Building and Renovation Sector Council. Charity is presently a business development officer with Efficiency Nova Scotia, specializing in affordable, nonprofit, and public housing developments.

Ramzi Kawar
MA
Board Member
is the current Director of Knowledge and Development Associates. Ramzi has over 40 years of experience in the architecture, housing, and sustainability sectors. His roots in these sectors were grounded in his work as manager of building design and director of greening and sustainable business practices at Housing Nova Scotia. Through his involvement, Ramzi developed an energy management strategy and built the first affordable passive house in Canada. Ramzi holds a master’s degree in architecture from the University of California at Berkeley and is on the Royal Architecture Institute of Canada’s Committee on Regenerative Environment and the Nova Scotia Association of Architects’ Awards Committee. He was previously the vice chair of the Built Environment Standard Development Committee for Accessibility. He received the Premier's Award of Excellence, two Minister’s IDEAL awards, and the Holly Bartlett Memorial Award for Community Contribution. Ramzi currently teaches International Sustainable Development at Dalhousie University.

Cory Porteous
Director of Marketing
Board Member
is a Director of Marketing at Office Interiors. As an active member of his community, Cory is a passionate Big and Board Member for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Halifax. He is also on the board for Atlantic Flamenco and the Greater Burnside Business Association. As a firm believer in the power of social enterprise, Cory hopes to leverage his diverse networks and marketing background to advocate for affordable housing.

Cheryl Tschupruk
MA, Certif. Community Leadership
Board Member
holds a master’s degree in social work and has worked across community, hospital, non-profit, and publicly funded settings over the span of her career. With over 20 years of experience in health and social care, she has a passion for quality improvement, change management, and policy development. Cheryl recently obtained a Certificate in Community Leadership from Mount Saint Vincent University and presently works as the Director of Homecare Operations and Business Development at Northwood Homecare Ltd. She is honoured to be an AHANS board member, bringing with her a commitment to social justice, compassion, and ethical decision-making.
